Hi there,

I've just done a quick search on Ancestry and I found someone's tree that might be the person you're looking for.

It lists an Alexander Hughen (Abt. 1767 - May 25, 1840) from Wigtown-shire, married to Christian Cowan (April 9, 1765 - Bef. 1861) on April 21, 1792. Father is listed as Alexander Hughen (Abt. 1740 - ) and mother is listed as Agnes Herries (Abt. 1740 - ). There is no data for Alexander the Father's parents, but his grandparents are listed. Paternal grandfather listed as Alexander Hughan (1670 - 1733) and paternal grandmother listed as Margaret (née Dunniston; 1682 - 1757). No more information earlier than that.

If you want to have a look yourself, here's a link: http://person.ancestry.co.uk/tree/23896758/person/27109327832/facts

You'll need an Ancestry account, though.

Hope this helped!

Nothing showing up in either Wigtownshire or Kirkcudbrightshire on SP so far and tree shows that the dates are estimates - no sources given.

I'll have another look, just in case.

Gadget

Added - there are a few early Hughan's showing in Kirkmabreck and Creetown burial grounds (MIs). There might be connections further back.

. Father is listed as Alexander Hughen (Abt. 1740 - ) and mother is listed as Agnes Herries (Abt. 1740 - ).

I'm sure one of the Kirkmabreck MI's does have Agnes Herries listed as wife to Alexander . but not the son.

Will dig it out again  :)

I wouldn't worry too much abut the different spelling, if I were you. Spelling wasn't a strict given in those days and many variations occurred in the records. It would depend what the parish clerk wrote down. Also, the index to the Kirkmabreck MIs says under Hughen 'see Hughan'.

Gadget

Added - my Carsons and McCrees from Kirkmabreck were given various spellings of their surnames in the registers. They were the same people though  :)

I've just been looking at the Wills and Testaments section of ScotlandsPeople  and find that there is one for Alexander Hughan, merchant in Creetown, 13/9/1773. Kirkcudbright Commissary Court Ref CC13/6/98.
It might be relevant and  could  be worth  downloading for 10 credits.
