Thanks everyone.  It's intriguing that there's relatively little about him, given the story.  And it's interesting to think how he would have coped with a room at the Charterhouse with that history.
I don't suppose the 1841 census for him survives  ???
Godden in East Sussex, mainly Hastings area.
Richards in Lea, Gloucestershire, then London.
Williamson in Leith, Vickers in Nottingham.
Webb in Bildeston and Colchester.
Wesbroom in Kirby le Soken.
Ellington in Harwich.
Park, Palmer, Segar and Peartree in Kersey.

Hi

Just one or two things found by doing a search for him (you may already have all of this!)

There is a baptism in Nottingham in 1766 for a John Kirkby Picard-parents John and Sarah. Also a document showing articles of clerkship in Kingston upon Hill 8 Nov 1781 (father John Picard). He seems to have married twice first to Elizabeth Haworth and then to Harriet Hayes in 1839 (presumably the Harriet on the 1841 census). His son John Kirkby Picard predeceased him - died 1837 and his will can be read on Ancy.(ie John Kirkby junr).

William
Dent (Haltwhistle and Sacriston), Bell and Jetson (Haltwhistle), Postle, Ward, Longstaff, Purvis, Manners, Parnaby and Hardy (Co. Durham), Kennedy and McRobert (Banffshire), Reid(Bathgate), Watson (Wemyss), Graham (Libberton), Sandilands (Carmichael), Munro (Dingwall)
