Hi and thanks for that info

From the info you originally gave re: birthyear may be 1839 or 1849 I suspect you have already seen the 1900 US census entry - is that correct?  He is 61 in 1900

If so - you will know that it shows his father was born in England and his mother in Ireland.  It also shows he had been married for 32yrs (ie) 1868 yet Eliza was only born around 1861 and first child wasn't born until 1880!!

He says he immigrated to the US in 1846.and had spent 54yrs there

If he was born 1849 in Canada - he could not have immigrated to the US in 1846 could he?  That casts doubt on the info he has given.

Was he born in 1839 but lied about his age because Eliza was a lot younger than him??

The only consistent info is that he was born in Canada so it is there you will need to concentrate on finding his birth details and name of his mother

In Ontario, civil registration dates from July 1, 1869. The Archives of Ontario holds records of births from 1869 to 1914, marriages from 1869 to 1929, and deaths from 1869 to 1939.
Usually check the parish registers for the Churches in the areas where their families lived/worked - although this you are not sure of.  Check with local genealogy groups in the area you are researching to determine if they have transcribed and published any of the parish registers you are searching for - once again you are not sure of this. The surname you are searching could be mis-transcribed and have other variations - have you tried looking for those ?
Don't forget the information given on census and other documents was only as good as the informant.

Sandra,

If you read the other posts above there are major discrepancies in his birth date from one document to another...the info that I've found does match his wife's name and his children...

His father's name on the Michigan death certificate is Elisha (Transcribed as Elidia) Cappell born Ireland. ? The 1900 US census has loads of errors as pointed out by Carolew in reply 9
