I believe that James Fleming married Mary Trotter in Newington, Edinburgh in 1859. They had a number of children including Christina Tait Fleming born 1862. In 1871 the family were living in Gilmore Place in Edinburgh and James is shown as born 1832 in Currie. Also in the household is his father, Matthew, age 70.
Matthew Fleming died in Gilmore Place (Newington) on 8th June 1872 age 71. He was the widower of Christina Fleming nee Tait and his parents were James Fleming dec'd and Agnes Fleming nee Aikman Dec'd. Informant was so James
Christina appears to have died in Dundee on 7th Dec 1860 age 60. She died at Morton's Square, Wellgate, Dundee and the informant was her husband Matthew. Parents given as Archibald Tait, Farm Servant dec'd and - Tait nee Glendumno?.
Matthew Fleming, brother of James ( per 1841 census mentioned above) seems to have married Agnes Somerville in 1860 in Currie. Familysearch shows three children born in Dundee in the 1860's including a Christina Tait Fleming.
Both James and Matthew are described as being Merchants on census entries.

Isobel....
WOW! There's a lot in your answer. Thank you so much.
I had come across the names of Matthew's parents and made a note of that as a possibility.

This is truly wonderful and gives me a lot to go on.

Many many thanks indeed.

The Dundee Courier has quite a lot of references to Matthew Fleming and his ale business and in one report in 1869 he is linked with George Dick who is described as his brother-in-law.

I have just checked William/Matthew on the 1851 and I find it strange that the census was taken on 31 Mar 1851 yet his birth and baptism on LDS site clearly state birth 30 Apr 1851 and baptism as William on 20 May 1851. So how can he be on the 1851 census aged 1 and named Matthew?

Maybe there are in fact 2 different people - one named Matthew and one named John.
I need to look into this further now!

It is probable that William and Matthew are two different sons but only the details of William, born just after the 1851 census, is to be found in the OPRs (as you know, there are lots of gaps and unrecorded BMDs in these records).

You have son Matthew, born earlier, from the 1851 census onwards. Likely William died between 1851-61. Might be worth checking for a death in either the OPRs or statutory deaths to see what shows.

Monica...Thank you for your message. I will delve in depth regarding these 2 boys.

I am still digesting and inputting the info I received yesterday.
