Thank You.
So Alice Steel - born out of wedlock, took on the name for the census. But when married had to use her legal name Alice Steel?

There is no such thing as a legal name. You can call yourself whatever you like as long as there is no intent to defraud.

Seems her marriage was in the name of Steel, but obviously Thomas thought of her as Beha when he gave the details to the Military person filling in his details. She could well have used both names.
But all the evidence points to them being the same person.

Remember he is Thomas ALbert Smith - when looking for Smiths a middle name can make all the difference!

Best thing to do I would say would be to get a copy of his marriage certificate to see who his father was and any witnesses ..Have you tried the Gro index for his birth ? See a Thomas A Smith in the 1891 census born about 1882 Stockton parents Thomas and Mary Smith Civil Parish Throston town Hartlepool ...

On Thomas' attestation sheet he is recorded on 8 Sept 1914 as being 33 years 66 days.

There are two Thomas Albert Smith born in 1881, Stockton. One being in q3 (MMN Blenkinsop) and the other in q4 (MMN Farrow), therefore I believe the one born in q3 would be your man. However the only way to clarify who is the correct Thomas would be to purchase his marriage cert which hopefully would record his father's name and occupation.

I have ordered the marriage certificate...should have this next week.

This information for Thomas Albert Smith is quite important to solve a family mystery around an adoption.

Thomas has a daughter called Mary Lily how married Thomas Forsyth. They had a child born Peter Forsyth. When Mary Lily died (when Peter was around 6mth old) he was given to another family who ultimately adopted him.

My assumption is that he wasn't given to a random family, but someone within the family. However, I cant prove anything yet, except in the adopted family there is a Smith, and in his birth family a Smith.

I want to try and find is one of Thomas A Smith's siblings could be related to one of the family members in either Finckens or Wadrops.
