STANNARD, JOHN - born in Thorpe, Norwich Norfolk in February 1810
« on: Thursday 12 January 17 15:44 GMT (UK) »
Greetings, fellow genealogical enthusiasts and researchers.

I am looking for as much detail as possible on JOHN STANNARD born in February 1810 in Thorpe, Norwich Norfolk, and his ANCESTORS.

According to my research on familysearch.org (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:27ZL-CVS):
  • He was christened on 22 February 1810.
  • The christening took place in Thorpe Episcopi, Norfolk, England.
  • The mother's name is Sarah Stannard.
  • There is no father recorded.
  • The scanned original extract in that link states the following (on my reading): “Feb 22 Stannard  |   John illegitimate child of Sarah born Feb 20".
I attach, for your ease of reference, a screenshot of that extract.
I am unable to find any further information concerning Sarah Stannard and the father of John Stannard, and am therefore at a dead-end with respect to tracing information any further back on my Stannard family line.

I would be greatly assisted by, and no doubt appreciate, information on the following:
  • Who the father of John Stannard was (or likely was), and any information about him;
  • Details about Sarah Stannard, including when she was born, whether she married, where she resided, when she died, who her ancestors were, and why John Stannard was born as an illegitimate child; and
  • Any other information concerning these ancestors of mine.
Thank you in advance.
Michael

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

Family search has 2 Sarah Stannard marriages in Norfolk and 3 in Suffolk between 1813 - 1817 but with no info on Sarah re: birthplace/birthyear  it would be difficult to determine if she married any of the spouses shown
Census Information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

The witnesses at his marriage William Bird and Harriet Bird whose relatives are they?
Finding out who they are may help.

Added Write the Norfolk Record Office, ask if they have any records for Thorpe St Andrew re: maintenance for child John Stannard son of Sarah 1810 (ish)
If Sarah needed monetary assistance to raise her son, she would have to tell the overseers who the father was and they would petition him for money to support John.

Thank you for this information.

Can any of the Sarah Stannards married in Norfolk be linked to the Sarah Stannard in the original post?

I will write to the Norfolk Record Office with that question.

I have previously looked online for that information, but it was with no success.

Thank you for your assistance.

Regards
Michael

There is also this marriage for Sarah Stanard and John Fitt 18 Feb 1811 at Great Plumstead (which is adjacent to Thorpe)

http://www.rootschat.com/links/01j9m/

Sarah 'may' have named her son after John Fitt

There is a will for a John Fitt of Great Plumstead held by Norwich Record Office, don't know if that is of any help.
Edit, think this might be John Fitts father

CatalogueRef   PRDC 1/2/10 fo. 24
Title   Fitt, John, yeoman, of Great Plumstead
Date   1800-1810
Description   Will

This will mentions his sons John and Samuel and daughter Elizabeth and also mentions a William Bird
