Burial Abbrieviations
« on: Friday 13 January 17 16:45 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

Just found you guys looks good thank you.

My 11th great grandfather John Davey was possibly buried in Chittlehampton Devon May 1665 - the burial record has an abbreviation after his and most others names which I think is tha or the or something like *ha/e anybody have any ideas on what this may mean please. So far my research is showing not a lot.

Thank you
Roger

Hi Roger

Welcome to Rootschat :D

I read it as

John Davey was buried the xiith May

There is a gap between the and the date purely so they all line up nicely on the right

Thanks Jan,

First appreciate the fast response - impressed!

However I have had another look at the parish record, you could likely be correct - not totally convinced but that maybe my looking for something deeper or just cynicism! :) Nonetheless appreciate your input.

Thanks

Roger

Having examined dozens of registers from this time frame I would definitely agree that the word is 'the'. Look at the 'e' in the word buried - it is the same formation. There is an 'h' further down the page in the surname Thorne and the 't' in Charles Nott's burial has the same 't' as in his 'the'

He was buried on 7 May (not 12 May).

vijth = 7th
