James VI and I wrote a study on demonology entitled:
"Daemonologie, In Forme of a Dialogue, Divided into three Books: By the High and Mighty Prince, James &c"

King James was heavily influenced by his personal involvement in the North Berwick witch trials from 1590.
Following the execution of a notorious sorcerer in the year 1591, the news of the trials was narrated in a news pamphlet titled "Newes from Scotland" and was included as the final chapter of the novel. The book endorses the practice of witch hunting in a Christian society.

All of this, and his views on witchcraft, led to his influencing the translations of the bible in his version of the bible.

I will repeat: There were no burnings in England before the ascent of James 1 ;D

Might she have been burnt for another offence, such as heresy, murder or treason?

The names of Heretics burnt at the stake have come down through history:

Only one in Maidstone - Thomas Hitton on 23 February 1530.

At least two women were burnt at the stake in Maidstone in the 1760/70s for murdering their husbands,
The other common offence was coining (high treason).

The Biblical,  "Thou shall't not suffer a witch to live!" was in Exodus long before James VI was even born!

Oh, no it wasn't! ;D
The original version, in Hebrew, said "Thou shalt not suffer a poisoner to live".
The word used was "m'khashepah".

James didn't invent witch trials, they were being prosecuted in Scotland post Reformation with Biblical authority during the minority of Mary his mother,  they weren't burnt for shoplifting!

There is the history of kent on the internet it has Alice Arden bunrt at the stake in 1551 for arranging the death of her husband it is very confusing as it would appear some where accused of witchcraft but as there was no law against it until later on they were put to death for treason or another reason I cannot however find mrs basse
