May gave to order the death certificate as a last resort.
You may as well bite the bullet and do it now. There isn't really an alternative, and it will cost you less than a cup of coffee or a pint of beer.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
