Jonas Montvydas- 1892-1975
« on: Saturday 14 January 17 23:19 GMT (UK) »
Hello to All,

I'm looking for information about my wife's great grandfather- Jonas Montvydas. He was born in Lithuania(Russian Empire at the time) in 1892 and died in 1975 in United States of America. He emigrated to US around late 1940's or early 50's.
I managed to find his burial record on findagrave.com. He died in Putnam, Windham, Connecticut.
Perhaps someone can find his immigration  record or obituary in newspaper.

Many thanks.

The SSDI has first name as John with a slight variation in the spelling of the last name. His SS number appears to have been issued in  Massachusetts meaning he lived and /or worked there at the time it was issued.

Yes. It has to be him. Thank you.
Good to know he was registered under slightly different name.

He seems to be on the Connecticut death index as John Montuidas - https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VZG3-Q5L

On the Connecticut Death Index  shellyesq posted it list his residence as Waterbury, , Connecticut.

I'm assuming this to be him in the 1954 Waterbury City Directory,

Name:   John Montvydas
Residence Year:   1954
Street Address:   2 819 Bank
Residence Place:   Waterbury, Connecticut, USA
Occupation:   Employee

I wonder?

Montvydas is a very unusual name. Could this be his brother? Same last name, age (b.1899) is close enough to be his  brother,  born Lithuania, died same place (Putnam, Windham, Connecticut).

The passenger ship record for Antanas Montvydas list his father as M.S. Montvydas.

Jonas Montvydas was a son of Jonas and Rosalia so I don't think it was his brother. Thanks for looking anyway.

Looks like there is quite large Lithuanian community in Connecticut so no wonder he moved there.

On the Connecticut Death Index  shellyesq posted it list his residence as Waterbury, , Connecticut.

The residence year 1954 is the year he moved to Waterbury? I suspect he might immigrated to USA in 1950's so it seems just about wright.

The 1954 Waterbury City directory says he was an employee of USRCo, which was the United States Rubber Co.

The 1968 Waterbury City directory has Montvidos, John, retired, home 95 Green.

The Waterbury public library does obituary look-ups, so it might be worth checking with them.  http://www.bronsonlibrary.org/genealogy
