Porteous Family of Colinton and Edinburgh
« on: Sunday 15 January 17 02:01 GMT (UK) »
I've been researching my roots and found an extensive family with the surname Porteous. In more recent history (late 1700s- mid 1800s) they've been confined to Colinton. I descend from a James Porteous (1798-1866) who married Jane Gilbert (1801-1839). He was the son of Robert Peroneaw Porteous (1777-1842) who married Louisa Ferguson (c.1777-1824). Now, I know Robert Peroneaw was the son of another James Porteous who married Janet Strathearn (1738-?) in 1762. He lived in Old Greyfriars. This is where the trail runs cold! I am really keen to know the Porteous history before this James. He, Robert Peroneaw and younger James were all builders or "master masons". I also know, that a grandson of Robert Peroneaw was well known around Colinton in his time. George Murray Porteous Esq. (1834-1915) ended up living in "The Tower" or Bonaly Tower in Junipergreen near Colinton and amassed quite a fortune, as his Will shows. Any information on this family at all?
