Help with a missing person - not sure it will end well!
« on: Sunday 15 January 17 17:35 GMT (UK) »
Hello All,

I have turned to the forum for help.

I am trying to find out what happened to Thomas Chester Milner, born in Finningley in April 1857.

Thomas was the illegitimate son of Elizabeth Milner born 1836 in Retford, Notts. She claimed Thomas Chester (born 1836 Finningley) as the father. Thomas Chester was later found to be the father by the Court Sessions at Retford. Thomas appealed the decision, but the original decision was upheld.

There is no evidence that Thomas Chester acknowledged his son, nor did he marry Elizabeth. His abandonment of her was total and he married another.

Elizabeth Milner was the daughter of William and Mary Milner and had at least two brothers: Charles and William. They were living in Finningley when the 1841 census was taken.

By 1851 the family was reduced: William junior and Mary were absent and I presume dead.

William was described in the census as a Servant and he in fact worked for the vicar in the rectory.

By 1861 William had left Finningley and was working as a Groom at Barbott Hall, Greaseborough, near Rotherham. His family were not with him. He died in 1864 and was buried in Finningley.

But what happened to his daughter Elizabeth and grandson Thomas Chester Milner? I can't find them anywhere. I have looked under difgferent surnames but trying to keep the same DOB or birthplace and everytime I think I have a lead it turns out to be wrong.

I would like to think that she found someone to look after her and the baby, but I can't help thinking that it did not end well for them.

Any, help, thoughts or detective aid, much appreciated?

Rob

This confirms Thomas's baptism at FINNINGLEY Holy Trinity and St Oswald
1857 05 12      Thomas Chester      mother    Elizabeth   MILNER   Single Woman   abode Finningley

There are only 2 Milner burials at Finningley:
1856 09 18   Mary   MILNER   age 55   abode Finningley
1864 05 07   William MILNER   age 64   abode Rotherham

I can't see any marriages for Elizabeth MILNER anywhere in Notts (though being close to the border she could well have ended up in Yorkshire like her father).

If I've understood your dates correctly, this burial may be worth checking out:

1866 02 13   Elizabeth   MILNER   age 30   abode Nottingham   buried  COTGRAVE All Saints

Like you, I can't see any trace of a Thomas Chester Milner on the Notts FHS CDs, though he may well have married in a registry office or lived past the turn of the century in which case his marriage or burial won't be on there.

Thanks Annie, I will look into the Cotgrave burial.

Thanks for the detail about the burial of her mother, Mary.

Hello Hol, the Bastardy case was reported in the local paper. It seems to have been rather a sorry episode with Elizabeth being jilted in October 1856 after a three year relationship (now thanks to Annie I know that was also just a month after the death of her mother too). She gave birth in April 1857.

Ok, from 1841:
Parents William and Mary born around 1800-1805, William is a groom. Charles b 1831, William Jr b 1834, Elizabeth b 1836.All born in Nottinghamshire apart from Mary.

From 1851:
At Mill Cottage/ Finningley, nr Doncaster are William (50, Gentleman's servant, born Ordsall Notts), son Charles (20, Farm servant, born Retford Notts) and daughter Elizabeth (15, born ditto). William Sr is married, not widowed, but Mary is elsewhere as is William Jr. There are a couple of possibilities for William, but Mary is harder without a birthplace.

From 1861:
William (59, Groom) working at Barbott Hall, Greasborough, Notts. Listed as unmarried, but suspect widowed.
William Jr is possibly at New York, Brimsworth nr Rotherham, coal miner, with wife Mary Ann.
Mary, Charles, Elizabeth and Thomas C are nowhere obvious.
