Maggie (Maggy) Gray
« on: Monday 16 January 17 13:44 GMT (UK) »
My Great Grandmother Margaret (Maggie) Gray was born in Burntisland Fife in 1850 (youngest child of Robert Gray and Henrietta (Paterson). She appears in the 1851 and1861 censuses in Burntisland but by 1871 both her parents having died and she seems to have moved on but I can't find her whereabouts.
My next trace of her was her marriage to William Parry in Newport Monmouthshire in Jan 1875. Does anybody have any suggestions that might be helpful?
She also had a half brother Archibald Dick born 1831, and my mother remembered being told about a visit by "Archie Gray from Burntisland" to their home in Herefordshire, which must have happened before 1915. I can't find him either. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Peter
As you can see, this section is not for requests.  You need to ask a moderator to move this to another forum.  I would have asked for you but don't know whether you want it in a Welsh county or English county or just a general Beginners.
You click on Report to Moderator on the lower RHS of the screen.

Hello
Possibility - there is a Maggie Gray (aged 22) working as a domestic servant in the 1871 census, at Raeburn Cottage, St Cuthbert Edinburgh, St Georges, Midlothian, Scotland.
She gives her place of birth as Kinghorn, Fife, which I understand is only a few miles from Burntisland?

There are a couple of references to Arch Dick in the Britain Merchant Seaman Records on FindMyPast, commencing:
Register ticket 442683 in 1845 (Arch Dick of Burntisland)
1853 - Arch Dick of Fife

Thank you Ray, she was my great grandmother and was actually born in Burntisland Fife in 1850.She died in Hereford at daughter Henrietta's house 1932 and is buried (as is William) in Norton Canon Churchyard. I subsequently found out that she was working as a maid for the Pastor of St Cuthbert's Church in Edinburgh in 1871, but how she got to Monmouthshire to marry William Parry remains a mystery.
She had 9 children although 5 died in infancy/childhood and 1 in the Great War. There is a lovely memorial to then in Norton Canon Churchyard
Sarah E (actually Sarah Helen) was my much loved Nan.
Henrietta and Elizabeth also lived into old age.
