Mudge Family : Gidleigh, Throwleigh Chagford Area

Have traced my Mudge line back to  baptism of James Mudge in Gidleigh on 28/3/1731. His mother is shown as Alice Mudge but no father shown on the transcript so I am assuming he was illegitimate, although have not seen the original baptismal entry. Have drawn a blank in finding an Alice who looks a possible candidate from a nearby parish; the only one I have found is in Marytavy in 1707. Can anyone with local knowledge suggest a way forward, please?. I have tried the main three online resources so am hoping that there may be some parishes whose records are not on line.

The original image doesn't give anymore info than what you have, it just says

 " James a base child, son of Alice Mudge : Mar. 28th"

I can't see any other baptism for Alice other than the one you have found also ???

Thank you for confirming the illegitimate status of James from the register. I will now have to find the marriage of his Grandparents, said to be George Mudge and Ann around 1704 in Mary tavy. It is a long time since I have been researching in Devon and it seems a lot of parishes / types of event are not yet on line.

A lot of my ancestors are from Devon and Cornwall and I have to agree some records for Devon are very thin on the ground.

Did James marry a JOAN - there is a baptism in Throwleigh of a GEORGE Mudge to James and Joan in 1763, which,  if they are following family naming traditions the baptism of Alice to George and Ann is looking quite good.

James married Joan Northcote in throwleigh on 10/2/1755. They had a daughter Elizabeth in April 1755 and she had Thomasin in 1780 which seems to be the direct line. The George/ anne marriage produced three children including Alice, in the early 1700s in Mary Tavy. The baptisms are on family search but cannot see the marriage anywhere.
