Does the 1866 marriage cert confirm her parents as John & Margaret nee Gray?

Given that they married 1818 and the big age gap between Georgina and her siblings - I wondered if she was a granddaughter

Hi

John Fortune would appear to have still been going strong in the 1871 census - on one site his surname has been transcribed as Fortrull.

He died 14 May 1878 and left a will - confirmation to daughter Euphemia 15 Jan 1879. If you download this from SP it might help.

A tree on FS shows his parents as George Fortune 1750 - 1824 and Margaret Armite 1755-1843
Margaret Gray died 1849 as per the tree and John Fortune 5.4.1878

Maybe, but never believe anything you find in an online tree. Always check the original documents yourself.

John was quite an age then when Georgina was born.Thank you leads i will follow up
I think I'd be more interested in Margaret's age. She is listed in 1841 as aged 45, which (because ages were supposed to be rounded down to the nearest 5 years) could mean she was actually 49. If this is accurate she was born between 7 June 1791 and 6 June 1796.

In 1851 Georgina's age was given as 8, meaning that (assuming it is accurate) she was born between 31 March 1842 and 30 March 1843.

This means that on the date of Georgina's birth Margaret's age was a minimum of 45, and she could have been several years older. It's not impossible, but rather unusual in the 1840s, for a woman in her late 40s to have a child.

Is it possible that Georgina was in fact the illegitimate daughter of John and Margaret's eldest daughter Margaret, adopted and brought up by her grandparents?
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Do not think John Fortune was her father...

The following marriage notice appears in the Dunfermline Saturday Press 9 June 1866.

At 276 Parliamentary Road Glasgow on the 4th inst by the Rev James McGregor of the Tron Church, George Motion, son of the inspector of the poor St Andrews,  to Georgina only daughter of the late George Fortune , Esq, St Nicholas, Aberdeen.

Hello everyone from a sunny hot day in NZ..IM looking for origins of Georgina FORTUNE b C1844 Glasgow m George MOTION in Glasgow in 1866..This couple ended up in Canada..I havent had any luck finding her parents etc ..Hope you can help thanks Julie-Ann
From other posts in this thread, it looks as if you have not viewed her marriage certificate, which is available to download at modest cost at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk. It will tell you the names of her parents, including her mother's maiden surname. Everything else appears to be based on a degree of speculation so far.
