John PAYNE - Elizabeth MARTIN marriage circa 1828 Leicester Area
« on: Tuesday 17 January 17 14:06 GMT (UK) »
Has anyone come across the marriage of John PAYNE a 'groom' to an Elizabeth MARTIN in the Leicester/Medbourne area in about 1828.  I have details of two children baptised in the Great Easton Wesleyan Chapel in 1829 and 1831 but have been unable to locate the marriage.  As I understand it they would not have been able to marry in the Wesleyan Chapel until later in the 19th century when such building were licensed for marriage, therefore I have been looking for the marriage in an Anglican church.  It also appears that John Payne died early, that is before 1841 but again I have found no burial record of him.  Can anyone please help. ???

I have come across a will of a John PAYNE of Leicester who died in 1834 who had a wife Elizabeth and also mentions his father and mother Edward and Elizabeth PAYNE, however I have not been able to link this with any certainty to the John PAYNE or PAYN above although I know that his wife Elizabeth above was I think a widow by 1841.  I need to find details of his burial to be sure, if anyone can help.

Hi All,
Thanks for all the information - I think without a doubt that the John Payne at Harvey Lane Baptist is undoubtedly the John Payne in the Will I have because it was proved in February 1834.  However, given that my John Payn and Elizabeth Martin had their two children baptised in Great Easton Wesleyan Chapel, I would think that it is unlikely this is the same John and Elizabeth Payne.  I also think that the burial of John Payne at Sheepy Magna is a bit too far from Medbourne to be the correct one.  I would suspect that John Payn or Payne would have been buried in the Medbourne area in a Wesleyan graveyard if there was one or at a parish church graveyard.  If anyone can come up with the right John Payn burial I would be grateful. :)

I know that his wife Elizabeth above was I think a widow by 1841.

What makes you think she may have been widowed by 1841?  Do you have her and the children in the census?

The marriage record states that at the time of marriage John was from the parish of Dingley, Northamptonshire, and there is a John & Elizabeth Payne living in Dingley in 1841 & 1851; although admittedly they appear rather old to have had children in 1829 & 1831.

Possibly connected is a Removal Order in 1820 for a John Payne and his wife Mary, the two parishes being Barrow upon Soar and Dingley.
