 Hi,
     A Green Howard P.O.W first in Italy and then in Germany, could you deduce what action he was captured from this scant info.

Three battalions of the Green Howards took part in the invasion of Sicily where they may have lost men to POW.  1st Battalion fought in Italy later.  So answer is no (not yet).   Are you able to post a name or even battalion?

I'd love to help (as I'm sure would others) BUT we really need to identify your man's battalion.  Has anything you have got a number in front of the word Green, for example - 1st Green Howards or 1 Green Howards or 4th Green Howards or 4 Green Howards or something similar.

While they didn't all serve in Italy, there were 12 battalions in all.  Infamously, many of 4th and 5th Battalions were taken prisoner at the battle of Gazala in North Africa in June 1942 and taken to Italy and later Germany.  1st Battalion took part in the Sicily invasion and suffered many casualties at the Gustav line in Italy and presumably lost men to POW there also.  Two other battalions served in the Middle East theatre as far as I can determine, any of which could have had prisoners taken to Italy so you see we would be throwing darts in a distant dartboard.

If you don't have any indication of his battalion then to avoid this simply being a guessing game, you need his service record.  Take a look at https://www.gov.uk/get-copy-military-service-records/overview to see how to go about it.

Two further thoughts.
Do you know when he was captured or how long he was in captivity?  That might narrow down the field.
Have a look at the link particularly at the places mentioned in chapter three to see whether they link at all with where your man lived.

You have two options, a long shot and a short one.

Long Shot - See if he completed a Liberation Report at the National Archives.

Short Sort - Get a copy of his service records.
