See Evening Post, 25 May 1876, Page 2 for a passing mention, as 'COWLINGS' (the 'S' might be a typo).

Might this be him?

Passenger F.A. COWLING, a miner from England aged 26, single, travelled Steerage on board the ALHAMBRA via Melbourne VIC AUS to Wellington, arrived (confirm this) on 15 May 1876.

Spades

There was a "Frank A. COWLING" > aged 24 years - occupation not listed > who arrived as an unassisted passenger to Victoria, in early May 1876 (no specific date of arrival found).

Possibly this man trans-shipped to Wellington per the "Alhambra" (May 1876) ???

Hi Brentor Boy,

It was usual for New Zealand death certificates to state the number of years deceased had lived in the country which, even though it might be inaccurate by a few years, often helps narrow the search range.

Do you have Frederick COWLING's death certificate? I assume he died in New Zealand?

Hi Spades. Thanks for suggesting his death certificate which I do not have.

When he died on 21 November 1912 he was in Thames hospital. His residence was Queen Street.

I guess my next move is to get his death certificate and hope it gives a clue to the date of his arrival.

It was something like this that I was hoping for when I started this thread as separate from my earlier one.

Incidentally, I took up your previous suggestion to contact The Treasury but as yet I have not received a response.

Don't worry, you will. ;)

The death certificate may not help much, but it might.

You could also try contacting the Thames branch of the New Zealand Society of Genealogists (NZSG) to see if they hold any information.
https://www.genealogy.org.nz/Thames_101.aspx

I have previously experienced problems getting a reply from branches when using the NZSG email servery-bot thing, so I suggest you write to the address on the contact page.

I've just noticed that Frederick's age at death was declared as 56. In fact he was 59, which prompts the question "How well informed was the informant?"

Thanks for guiding me towards NZSG.
