Samuel (MACGILLIVANTICH) MACDONALD
« on: Wednesday 18 January 17 15:43 GMT (UK) »
Looking for information on Samuel MacGillivantich, born Achnaboban, Spean Bridge,1866, son of John MacGillivantich and his wife Flora Campbell. The MacGillivantichs changed their surname to MacDonald sometime between 1861 and 1871. Samuel was ordained a Roman Catholic Priest in Oban in 1894 and served in Fort William, Laggan and Daliburgh. He officiated at his sister's marriage in Roy Bridge in 1897 and was in Edinburgh in 1900 - then he disappears. Catholic Church directory has no obituary for him. Did he go abroad or did he leave the priesthood? Any information would be appreciated.

Was his birth registered as MacGillivantich or MacDonald?  SEE REPLY 3 BELOW

Scotlands People are showing no trace of a birth under MacGillivantich or a marriage for John & Flora under that surname - is that the correct spelling?

Do you know his exact birthdate?

By what name was he known as a priest?

In 1861 they are living with Flora's parents and the surname is transcribed as Mc Gillirantin

Additional child John aged 6 so marriage appears to be pre-1855 and was presumably under that surname

Kilmonivaig ED 6 Page 3 Line 4

From Family Search - note surname is Mc - not Mac

John Mcgillivantich m Flora Campbell 20 Jan 1853 Kilmonivaig, Inverness

And Samuel's birth also from FS

Samuel Mc Gillivantich born 12 April 1866 KILMONIVAIG, INVERNESS, SCOTLAND
father: John Mc Gillivantich mother: Flora Campbell

Thank you Carole - sorry - force of habit using Mac instead of Mc. I had his birth and date of parents marriage, brothers and sisters etc.
I am just puzzled as to what happened to him after being in Edinburgh in 1900. The descendants of his sister had never even heard of him!

I can't find any death on SP for him as McGillivantich and I think that would be the name used in any marriage or death as that was his birth surname.

That's the strange thing - there are no deaths or marriages for his brothers or sisters under McGiilivantich - they are Mc/MacDonalds.

The change of surnames was not uncommon at that time. My line from Moidart area changed from MacIsaac to M(a)cDonald too around the 1850s.

Added: Close but wrong entry  :-\

Have you excluded the death in Partick, Glasgow in 1920 for a 54 yr old Samuel McDonald? I included the name of Campbell for the mother's maiden name.

If it is the correct one, there is an entry in the Wills & Testament section of SP which has:

Samuel MacDonald - 5/11/1920 - 25 Gordon Street, Whiteinch, Glasgow, d. 06/07/1920 at Glasgow, intestate.
