HAMLEY
« on: Wednesday 18 January 17 17:49 GMT (UK) »
I am seeking the birth of George HAMLEY; he married Anne RUNDELL in Tavistock Devon 21  Aug 1784;  she was christened Anne RENDLE in the town Feb 1760 but there's no evidence of his baptism there. They were non-conformists.
I estimate his birth to be 1750-1765 possibly close to the Devon/Cornwall border.
Any help is gratefully appreciated. Thank you.

There seems to be a few spelling variations that you might try Hamly/Hambley/Hambly.
Do you have a middle name/initial for him?
Do you have any names for their children. As frequently families use naming conventions where children are named after parents/grandparents.

Thank you very much for your response.
I am unaware of any second name for George nor of any of his off-spring who were: George 1785-1867; William 1788-1799; Susanah 1790-1855; Ann 1793-1868; Jane 1799-1861. George 1785 is my direct ancestor; there have been a few 'George William's in the wider  Hamley family.
That is all the help I can think of at present.

From what  I have seen so far the majority of Hamley's seem to have been in Cornwall so I am confining my search to that area for now (as you mentioned at least villages near the Devon border anyway), using names of William and Susanah as possible parents names.

Cornwall-OPC-database has non-conformist baptisms.
Some of the circuits overlapped into Devon.

My ancestors were Bible Christians from North Devon, and I found some of their records in the Kilkhampton Circuit records on Cornwall OPC. ;D

My HAMLEYs are Devon, but I can sympathise with the changing spelling, especially if the "variants" program doesn't pick up on them all. Not the worst surname I've had for that though  ::)
