I just googled to find what happened, still talking about the stolen wheelbarrow! ;D
At least a peaceful resolution to it.

Also interesting to compare the national and local news coverage Trish.

I guess the biggest difference is in the 'old days' the local bobby would know the person involved, know he has a gun (probably for shooting pests), and know that there is no way on earth he would use said gun for shooting at another person (although I'm speaking in general terms, not this specific case as I don't know the details). The incident would have been resolved with the bobby knocking on the door and saying something like "come on son, there's no need for this let's go and have a pint". Today it needs half a police force (most living miles away, possibly never having heard of 'Crowfield'), a helicopter hovering overhead and markspeople dressed ready for WW3. I'm not criticising the police, I think they have done a great job, but think sometimes we should reflect on the effects of globalisation and what our ancestors would have thought of it all.  ???

Baptisms at Gosbeck:

Liddy b.121/5/1788, bp.12/3/1797
Richard b.9/3/1792, bp.12/3/1797
Jonathan b.5/8/1793, bp.29/9/1793
Stephen b,16/8/1794, bp.14/9/1794
Joshua b.9/1/1800, bp.9/2/1800 (this is presumably your Joshua George).

All children of John Sheldrake and Hannah Goymour.   So, the first two here were not baptised at the time they were born and baptised together in 1797.

More than likely, I'd say - said Robert was bur.30/1/1791 Ramsholt plus there were 2 other infant burials at Ramsholt:

Jonathan bc.1788 bur.24/8/1788
Mary bc.1789 bur.18/1/1789

No other Sheldrake burials in Ramsholt.

Thank you for your excellent coverage of this topic. I am reminded of the works of George Ewert-Evans who wrote Ask the Men who Cut the Hay and where Beards Wag All, which inspired me with the virtues of oral history and got me to pestering my parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and other kin to get their stories back in the 1960's and 70's and started me on this fascinating hobby.

Absolutely - the first time I read 'Acky' I had to keep on reminding myself that the characters weren't really people I knew, even though they seemed to be clones!

The film of 'Akenfield' is also worth watching to get an idea of what rural Suffolk life was like.
