Death of Charles Dobson, spouse of Margaret Ireland
« on: Friday 20 January 17 17:33 GMT (UK) »
According to the 1851 census, Charles Dobson was born in England about 1822.
1851 Census. Murraygate, Dundee. Charles Dobson 29, Margaret 27, Mary 2, Margaret 1 and Ellen Boddy 18 servant. ED15/30

Charles Dobson married Margaret Ireland on 24 Nov 1847 in Dundee.

I cannot find Charles on any further censuses.
I have found Margaret and the children in 1851, 1861, and 1871.
Their last child I believe was Henry Murdoch Dobson 14 Oct 1862; but funnily enough there was a big gap between him and the earlier children who were born 1847, 1850 and twins in 1851.

I am really looking for a death for Charles just to tidy things up!!
Can anyone help?

I've searched on Scotland'sPeople (1851-1871) but there seems to be only three, all of whom died when they were under the age of 5 years old.  Not knowing where he was born makes it difficult to find his parents and possible pace of death. For example, did he go south to visit his parents and died while there?

Can anyone help out here please.
Suzie

Is she shown as a widow?

Have you downloaded a copy of his birth cert to check whether Charles was his father?

His 1851 occupation is basket maker

The English 1861 for Hull has a Charles Dobson aged 40 occ basket maker born Hull but he is shown as unmarried and the uncle of the householder Timothy Bartho 25 b Hull occ hairdresser

RG9 Piece 3595 Folio 55 Page 3

I can't see an English 1851 entry for him

Carole

Thanks for your replies.

On Ancestry one can only see a transcription of the census sheets. Margaret was shown as Head in 1861 and 1871. Relationship not transcribed.

No, I have not downloaded Henry's birth certificate but did find the citation on LDS saying he was son of Charles and Margaret. I wold have to pay for the birth certificate and that is not up to me as I am doing this for a friend and that would have to come from her.

The English Hull 1861 census is interesting. Age would be about right and occupation. I will look at that census.

Many thanks for your help.

You really need to look on Scotlands People at the actual census images.  If Margaret is shown as married - then Charles was presumably still alive at that time so any search for a death would be after the last census entry she appears on.

What about Margaret's death cert - any mention of Charles?

That 1861 census is interesting but odd at the same time.

Yes, I think you are right...going to need to persuade friend to spend some money and look at originals on SP.

Many thanks.

Just been looking at the 1861 entry and notice Margaret is a fancy toy dealer which may suggest she was not receiving any financial support elsewhere.  Either she and Charles were separated or he was deceased.

The twins baptisms show her as Margaret Gray Ireland but the other births plus marriage just as Ireland

Although Charles is shown as the father on the baptismal entry - I wonder if he appears as the father on the birth cert??

Suzie, I am not sure if it connects to your Charles, but there is one other family of Dobsons with connections to Yorkshire in Dundee at the same time, also basketmakers from England.  Great bio on the line here  www.soutar.net/notes06(15).pdf  Also here www.soutar.net/notes05(8).pdf

Monica

PS: Ignore the happy sunglasses smilie...link works to the pdf! Sometimes happens on RC with the number 8 written in a particular way into the text. Gremlins  ::)

Some suggestions to consider, working through some of the data on those pds.

The parents of Ralph Dobson were an Edmund Dobson, basket maker and Agnes/Nancy Winn (from the pdf. Guess this has been verified against Ralph's death cert in Scotland?). Ralph's birth place is showing in 1871 in Scotland as Bridlington, Yorkshire.

There are certainly births/christenings showing there on FS that would correspond.  I am thinking that Agnes Winn died and Edmund Dobson may have remarried to a Jane (Ward?). Births/christenings then show in Hull (one in Bridlington as a possible linking up). See entries on FS www.rootschat.com/links/01jbc/

Also, an 1851 census entry for Jane and Edmund Snr in Hull https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SG1G-CQ9

Might be good to find out who the mother was of hairdresser Timothy Bartho 25 b Hull that Carole found earlier from 1861 (added: this entry for him? https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N1C9-YMB  Mother Maria Reeve I think, so not sure on the Dobson 'uncle' route now...)
