Just realised the OP was in touch with me through Ancestry last year about Lachlan & Flora.

The son born to Lachlan Mackinnon and Flora Wilson in May 1914 was my Grandfather John Mackinnon.  However his birth certificate mistakenly had the name listed as Mckinnon.

If it's the same tree, Flora was the sister of my grandfather, John Wilson b 1892.

Having been given the marriage year of Lachlan Mackinnon and Annie Mackenzie (1903) I'm amazed that a year on and the 2 trees that are on Ancestry for Norman Gillies Mackinnon are both wrong! (one belonging to the OP of this thread).

One has Lachlan as b.1888 Elgol, Invernesshire, son of John Mackinnon and Flora Dornie MacInnes and the other as b.1877 Elgol, Invernesshire, son of Donald Mackinnon and wife Christina.

If anyone had bothered to look at the marriage certificate  (dated 10/12/1903 Duirnish) it clearly states that Lachlan's parents were Peter Mackinnon and Dorothy Gillies (Annie being the dau. of Alexander Mackenzie and Marion Murchison).  His address when he married was 6 South Street, Greenock.

Census shows Lachlan as bc.1876 Duirnish, Invernesshire  (with parents and surname transcribed as McKinnon) and birth certificate reveals he was born 2/5/1875 Duirnish,  son of aforementioned Peter and Dorothy (who married 30/1/1873 Duirnish).

Nothing difficult about finding this out - so how come 2 trees still have things completely wrong!

Annette,
It's not unusual unfortunately.  I think someone makes a mistake on Ancestry & then others blindly follow the hint without verification through certificates/census.

Hmm...Something amiss with this statement then  ???

i am actually making decent headway on ancestry now with some help from SP.

I think the reverse would be true.....

Making decent headway on SP now with some help from Ancestry  ;D

The obvious route from the onset was the marriage pointed out by Rosie.
I don't understand why people ask for help then ignore the help they're given  :-\
