John Purves death date?
« on: Sunday 22 January 17 16:49 GMT (UK) »
Hello, my FindMyPast membership expires next week again but I still cant find the death date of John Purves baptised east Lothian haddingtonshire Scotland 1762 nor his wife Helen Horston born 1768 Orkneys. I've had problems with Scottish history before so apologies if I've messed it up but John seems still living in the 1841 census living in Dunbar aged 79 with Margaret Lyal, any help would be greatly appreciated in locating John or Helen's death year/location. Matthew.

Welcome to Rootschat

I may be wrong, but I didn't think that FindMyPast had many Scottish records. Have you tried looking on Scotland's People?

You might get more answers if this was on the Scotland board - I'll ask a Mod to move it for you.

FreeReg has the burial of a John Purves in Dunbar on 3rd July 1842.
No age is given but he is described as an old man.

His OPR marriage and baptism records of his children have his wife's name as Helen Yorston

There is a death record in Dunbar for a Helen Purves  dated 28 Sept 1810

A bit of background information for you

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Dear Matt,

On my husband's side of the family I have John Purves married to Helen Yorston in 1785 in Dunbar.  I do not have a date for John Purves' death, but I do have two children, James born in 1803 in Dunbar and Peter born in 1799, also in Dunbar.  My husband is descended from James' daughter, Mary, who married John Elsden in 1868 in Middlesex.  Peter Purves was a very interesting man who started out in quite a humble way but became a teacher and a poet.

Like you I have not found Scottish records easy to search, but if there is anything else I can fill in, please let me know.

Best wishes

Diane Lea-Jones
