John Burrows Rose
« on: Monday 23 January 17 17:06 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to help a friend solve his brick wall.

He would like to link his ancestor George with an Edward Rose an attorney who was married to Ann Burrows. Because a number of following generations had a second Christian name of Burrows this is quite feasable.

John Burrows Rose was born in 1798 and was a spirit merchant and landlord of two inns on the Thames namely The Old Barge and the Admiral Vernon.

He had an older brother George Burrows Rose who was a Captain in the 69th cavalry.

I cannot find a baptism for either of them but know their parents were George Rose & Mary Tandy.

There is another generation back before Edward & Ann and the only child of theirs that I can find anything about is Phyllis born in Thame in 1731.

So - just to be clear on the starting facts:

John Burrow(e)s Rose was born c1798 in Oxford or Thame, according to the censuses (1851 says "Thames", Oxon which is presumably a reference to Thame).

George Burrows Rose was, you say, a captain and presumably father of Alicia Maria Rose (1842) and Mary Jane Rose (1844), both born in Plymouth with mother's maiden name O'Malley.  They were with Uncle John in 1851, as "daughters of the late Capn Rose".  So George had died by then - do you have his dates?

What is the source for George & John's parents' names as you/your friend have them?

Ann Burrows's sister Phyllis dies in 1728, living in Thame.
From her will:

"i give unto my brother Geo Burrowes one hundred pounds which I desier him to pay with interest for ? to my sister Ann Rose and her discarge shall be in full discarge without Mr Rose haveing to dow with it and for her to dispose of it to any child she pleases"

Thank you for your quick responses.

My friend inherited a hand written tree compiled by a family member who in no longer alive so we don't know the source of the information.

The birth date of George Burrows Rose 1785 ties in with the marriage of George Rose & Mary Tandy at St Paul, Deptford 31 Dec 1782.

According to this tree they had Edward, Henry & 3 daughters in between George Burrows & John Burrows but no dates shown.

The generations on the tree go back to John Rose who was churchwarden of Thame in the reign of Henry V111!!
