Mystery - Death of William Parry
« on: Monday 23 January 17 19:35 GMT (UK) »
We have been searching for more than 10 years without success for a death certificate for my mother’s grandfather William Parry.  He apparently died before she was born and was never mentioned by her parent’s.

William was born on the 27th July 1868 in Nantmawr near Mold in Flintshire but moved with his parents to Staffordshire when he was less than 2 years old where he then grew up and worked.

He is recorded on the 1911 Census living at 10 Stubbs Street, Newcastle-under-Lyme and is living with his wife Florence and daughter Alice May.  His age is given as 43 and his occupation is described as a bricklayers labourer working in the Railway industry.  The Brampton Museum in Newcastle under Lyme has a Rate Book for the Newcastle under Lyme Poor Law Union for 1914 where a “William Perry”, living at 12 Stubbs Street, is assessed under section 4 of the Poor Rate Assessment and Collection Act 1869.

There is then a gap of 16 years before his daughter Alice May Parry marries Henry Pepper on the 2nd August 1930. On their marriage certificate Alice May’s  residence is still 12 Stubbs Street and in the place where her Father’s name should be recorded it just says “deceased”.

We have speculated that as he was a miner in his early working life he may have been a tunneller in the First World War but none of the deaths during this period seem to match his details.  Could his name have been mis-transcribed he is referred to as both Parry and Perry?  Was he living away when he died as we can’t locate a death in Staffordshire in the period 1914-1930 which matches his details. Did he end up in the workhouse?

Whatever the reason it’s a mystery to us and we would love some help to solve it.

Do you know where Florence was buried, and looked for any records of him there?

This is the only death matching his profile but it does not match with Alice's marriage.  Have you already investigated/discounted it?

William Parry 77 (1869) Date of Registration   Sep 1946  Newcastle under Lyme
Volume 9b Page   200

The Staffs 1911 has 2 other William Parry's in roughly the same age range but they were not living in the Newcastle under Lyme Registration District at that time

William Parry, 1869, is also showing on the 1939 in Newcastle-under-Lyme.  I do not have full access for dates of birth etc.

Added:
In the household is Thomas J Madew, who appears to marry an Ethel Parry in 1930.  So probably wrong man?

Judy - unless you have already done so , it might be worth checking that entry on the 1939 register.

Alice & Henry married in N- under L so the family seem to have remained in that locality

I noticed that the 2 births of Henry & Alice's children show her maiden name as Perry - not Parry

Ethel Parry -who married Thomas Madew- is in a tree on ancestry as the daughter of William Parry and Emily Riley.

Not that it is relevant to this post but that tree owner has not researched properly.  The Parry/Riley marriage was 1903 whereas Ethel was born March qtr 1898 to William's first marriage.  He is a widower in 1901

Ethel's mother was Sarah Ann Harvey who married William Parry 1895 and died March qtr 1898 - presumably during/after childbirth

I have sent a message via Ancestry to the tree owner

Florence was buried in Newcastle under Lyme cemetery.  We don't live locally and haven't been able to thoroughly check for a record of William there but we did ask someone at the cemetery office and they couldn't find anything.
