Arthur Wilson - BRISTOL
« on: Tuesday 24 January 17 15:35 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

I have already asked for info on the above in other threads but thought it might help if I specify in the Gloucestershire board.

The above is my 3rd great grandfather. According to census records in 1851 he was born in Bristol in 1811 and was a shoe maker living in Sunderland.

I am looking for his birth cert as no idea of his parentage/ family so any look ups would be appreciated.

thanks
Sue  :)

Civil Registration only began in 1837, so there will be no Birth Cert.
It will be a case of looking for Parish Records for a baptism - assuming he was baptised.
Bristol will have a lot of parishes to consider, especially if he was living a long way away (Sunderland) then he may not have come from the main town but may still have said "Bristol" even if he was born in a neighbouring village.
Does he give any more info on any other censuses? Where and when did he marry?
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Thanks for the prompt reply.

All I have from 1951 census info is that he was a shoemaker ( cordwainer ). His wife was Mary Ann Bates ( also recorded as Henrietta Mary Ann Bate from London). They had possibly 6 boys . one born in Shrewsbury with the rest born in Sunderland.

Strange that 4 of the boys were named with "Bates" as their middle name which makes me wonder that Arthur and Mary Ann were not married ( as no marriage cert located) albeit she is shown as "wife" on the census.

I think he died in 1860 in Sunderland. No census for 1831/1841 located.

So thats it I'm afraid!

Possibly a second marriage? (As per the 1871 census).

Marriages Jun 1863
GORDON    Robert        Sunderland    10a   560
Rowley    Martha        Sunderland    10a   560
WILSON    John        Sunderland    10a   560 ***
WILSON    Mary Ann        Sunderland    10a   560 ***

Not that it helps much!

Apologies to you all for causing chaos.

I was in a mess with the 2nd Arthur Bates Wilson born Shrewsbury but resident in Sunderland then Liverpool ( as per my other thread) so thought I would have a go at finding his father Arthur Wilson born Bristol.... ::) ???

Sorry. X

Hi all, its me again still looking for Arthur Wilson in Gloucestershire/Bristol !

Does anybody know if cordwainers were often part of a travellers group? so thus not much official records held in they were moving around the country.

I'm wondering if this is the reason I cant track my Arthur down with any birth record or marriage record & am only going by info on the 1851 census?

Thanks ( grasping at straws!!)
Sue
