Not sure how else you will get it, unless someone near you has an unsecured broadband!

So you intend to connect your PC/laptop (or whatever) to the router.

What do you intend connecting the other end of the router to?

Is this new purchase designed to be connected to a telephone line or a cable supplier?

For you to connect to the outside world via a telephone line you need to contact one of the various suppliers of service! (various companies)
Your supplier will supply you with a router/modem to connect your equipment to their services.
Costs, well that depends on which level you want baring in mind the slowest speed is the cheapest.
[Please note that I do not use a phone connected internet connection, so can't say what price or if good/bad service from new supplier]

The only way I know to get free Internet connection is to find a cafe, shop or pub with free wi-fi; but it won't be a secure connection.

Or, as groom has said, you might be lucky enough to find a neighbour hasn't secured their wi-fi  ;)

It's illegal to use your neighbour's Internet service without their consent.
