Agree with you nothing showing in Scottish records.

Are you certain he was born in Scotland ? Could he have been born in England ?

There is a Roger James Candlish showing on familysearch.org.uk who has the same birth date as your Roger.
This one died I England in 2004.

Could the surname have originally been McCandlish?

Carole W  -  I have tried all variations of the surname on Scotlands People and came up with nothing.

Anitaszaban  -  What was the year of his previous marriage - was it 1963 by any chance ?

I too searched variations, that's why I bought the Scottish marriage certificate ,
Rodger married in 1963, then Scotland 1973 divorced 1977, then married again wigan 1988 and then again 2003 the year before his death, 2 wifes deceased, it seems he was handy with his fists by his sons accounts. his widow knew nothing of his family but was told they dropped the MC from their surname, this ive not seen any evidence of, The last wife was told he was born in Glasgow, but states Eyemouth brenwishire on this certificate, I have also found some newspaper cuttings online on genes showing his in the press as a naughty boy and imprisoned when he was 21 stating he was in trouble from years 1944 - 1954 so he would have been 10 in 1944 ?? parents names Sarahwhittaker and james candlish ( I'm going in circles) ive checked ancestry and no births their either x
