Jane Walton
« on: Thursday 26 January 17 09:22 GMT (UK) »
I wonder if you can help me please ?

Thomas Walton my 4x grandfather died in 1821 at Barras Field, Weardale, Stanhope. I can't find what happened to Jane (nee Wearmouth bapt. St.Johns Stanhope on 1 Oct. 1780) after Thomas' death. In the 1841 census her children were living with their uncle, Featherston Walton, at Westgate. I wonder if she remarried ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What were the names and date of birth of Thomas & Janes children

I can see Featherstone in 1841 but am not sure which are his children  :)

There are 4 marriages listed for a Jane WALTON in Durham area between 1821 and 1841 the most likely is one in Weardale Vol 24 Page 217 GRO.

Without the children's names it will be hard for a definitive answer!

Rosie,
Children of Thomas and Jane were...
William    (b) 1802
Margaret (b) 1805
Jane        (b) 1807
Elizabeth  (Betty)(b) 1811
Ann         (b) 1813
Thomas   (b) 1815
Ralph      (b) 1819
All were born at Barras Dale Farm with the exception of Elizabeth and Ann who were born at Crooked Well.
As Thomas died in 1821 it appears in the 1841 census that the children lived with Featherston Walton , a brother of Thomas, and therefore an uncle of the children, except that there is a Joseph aged 9 at Featherston's address in Westgate, who more than likely is the child belonging to Featherston and his wife Elizabeth.

I can't find Jane (Wearmouth) the mother of the children and the husband of Thomas who either re-married or died.

Many thanks for your help.

Neil, I just posted details of the children to Rosie and sent it at the same time I received your reply.
I looked at the Weardale marriages of Jane Walton as you suggested however the names of the witness's are  not familiar to me so I have some doubts that those Janes is mine.

this is the 1841 record of Featherstone & wife Elizabeth
Featherstone   Walton   50
Elizabeth   50

Ralph   25
Thomas   20
William   15
Margaret   13
Joseph   9

They do not match with the children you have listed as being those of Thomas & Jane,   the names do but not the ages.

There are marriages for Ralph bn c1812 (1843) and Thomas bn c1821 (1856) which both give father as Featherstone  :-\

Rosie,
Thank you for pointing out that the ages don't match, I completely overlooked checking the dates in detail.
Featherston Walton was a brother of my Thomas and born in 1788 so I thought that when Thomas died in 1821 ( I have a copy of his will and his probate record) the children may have gone to live with their uncle. So it appears not so.
So I wonder what happened to Jane and the children, remains a mystery....I will keep on searching ::)
Many thanks.

I am joining into this topic a bit late but the Church at Stanhope is St. Thomas, Stanhope. The Church you are possibly referring to is St. John's in a place west of Stanhope called St. John's Chapel. See link below.
