Thanks Barry,
My wife on her computer and myself on mine have all day tried every way which way to nail the death down of Jane . Tried the different marriages after the death of her husband in 1821 to no avail. Just about run out of options.
Thanks again.

Rosie,
There are so many Walton's in the Stanhope area (like Jones in Wales)it is very difficult to find which ones belong to me. We have however sent for a death certificate for a Jane Walton who died in 1839. This may solve her mystery death date. We know Jane was alive in 1821 when Thomas died, for in his probate record, and his will, he left his estate after paying off any of his debts to Jane, and she does not appear in the 1841 census. There are a couple of Jane Walton's who died within this period but none seem to fit except the one who died in 1839. This adds to the problem of finding any of her children.
We are still looking for the marriages of the children as well as being in the 1841and the 1851 census.
Trying to concentrate in the first instance on finding Ralph Walton.
Many thanks for your help.
John Walton.

The Jane Walton who died in 1839 was said to be aged 65, i.e. born c. 1774  :-\

This is a possible contender for son Ralph in 1851

HO 107 / 2393 / 360 / 28

Quarry Row, Four Lane Ends, Hetton le Hole

Ralph Walton, head, m, 32, Coal Miner, Durham Chapel in Weardale
Margaret do, wife, m, 31, do, Waggon Hill
Hannah Naisbitt daughter, u, 11, scholar, do, Hetton

(Margaret and Hannah Naisbitt can be found in Hetton le Hole in 1841.)

If this is indeed the right Ralph, then this death would be worth considering, given the place of burial

Jane Walton, 1q 1849, Houghton le Spring, 24, 141, aged 69 (i.e. b. 1780)
This looks like her burial: Jane Walton aged 69 St Nicholas Hetton le Hole 25 March 1849

Thank you JenB I must have missed that one and have ordered this certificate as it is more accurate.

Many thanks,

Pam

Thank you JenB,
I have now received the death certificate for Jane Walton and you were correct - many thanks. Jane died 22 March, 1849 at Four Lane Ends Hetton le Hole. Present at the death was Margaret Walton. Margaret was the wife of Ralph Walton.
Now to find the elusive Ralph. Margaret died in 1890 and Ralph was in the 1891 census living at Four Lane Ends Hetton le Hole and a widower. The only death I can find for Ralph after that date was there was a Ralph Walton who died 1893 in Durham and a Ralph who died in 1895 at Gateshead. I feel it is the Ralph who died 1893 and I guess the only way to be sure is if I buy the death certificate. ???

"Ralph Walton, head, m, 32, Coal Miner, Durham Chapel in Weardale"

Chapel in Weardale is another name name for St. John's Chapel  - just West of Stanhope.
