James BATEMAN Upton Cum Chalvey
« on: Thursday 26 January 17 17:47 GMT (UK) »
James BATEMAN died in Eton Union House, Upton Cum Chalvey in June 1839, aged 86.  He is buried in the Churchyard at Upton cum Chalvey.  Does anyone know if the Overseers' Accounts for this parish have survived and where I could see them?  Similarly, have any of the Admission and Discharge Books for the workhouse survived.  Many thanks

Thank you for your quick reply but I had already looked at that page and the link to the Centre for Buckingham Studies was not working. Neither was the link when I tried a direct search. http://www.buckscc.gov.uk/sites/bcc/archives/centre_for_buckinghamshire_studies.page
Has it moved?

Thank you for that link - it worked perfectly!  It doesn't look as if the Overseers' Accounts have survived - does anyone have experience of the "Volume containing nominal roll of poor relieved in the districts of Slough, Upton and Chalvey, 1873, with at back lists of subscribers and district visitors".  I am interested in someone who died in the Union Workhouse in 1839 and was hoping to see if he had  been supported by the parish before that date.

Looks like your Bateman's were resident in Slough. I could not find his baptism in c1753 (familysearch). Possible marriage to Jane Crosswell 24Dec1781 UcumC. Son James bapt. 24Apr1785, son George 5Jun 1796 UcumC and daughter Sophia 27May1798 UcumC.

County Records at Aylesbury include those parts of Bucks transferred to Berks in 1974. Worth giving them a ring on 01296-382587 even as second attempt.

He would likely have seen King George III come along the Bath Road, turn left into the Windsor Road to visit the Herschel house where the 40foot telescope was and where William Herschel discovered Uranus.
