Does anyone know of or have in there tree a Sydney v Southgate b1897 or Arthur C Southgate b approx 1902 that lived in Lonsdale Avenue or Frinton Road, East Ham. Arthur married my Gran Doris Smith in 1942.  If anyone knows of these southgates I would love to know.

Are you researching their ancestry?

If so - have you checked the 1911 census to establish who their parents were?

If you check freebmd - Sydney Victor's birth was registered in Reading and Arthur Cecil's in West Ham

www.freebmd.org.uk

Using the info on freebmd you can now check the GRO online to establish their mothers maiden name

Thank you Carole for the information re the Gro.

What it actually is, is that we are trying to locate what happened to Hubbys Grandfather William Smith,  he walked out of the Marritable home in around 1933 suposedley never to be seen or heard of again.  William married hubbys gran in 1916 and later had a lodger Sydney v Southgate  and he appears on several electrol rolls,  what we think happened is His Gran had an affair with Sydney and a son was born in 1933 sept,  from putting 2 and2 together this is probably why he left.  Hubbys Gran went on to marry Sidney's brother Arthur in 1942,  so as you can see a bit of a tangled web.

We don't know where William was born which makes it difficult and we don't know hubbys great grans first name to worsen things.

Just thought if we could find Southgates living descendants they may have some info or stories.

So - gran was Doris M Smith (married name).  When and where did she die?

A copy of the 1942 marriage cert to Arthur will give you the following info:

1.  Her fathers name which in turn gives you Doris's maiden name.  That will help trace her birth reg and her first marriage as there are a lot of William Smith marriages in 1916

2.  It will tell you whether she was a widow or a divorcee

3.  If a divorcee - you can search for a divorce between 1933-1942

There is a William Smith/Doris Wilding marriage in East Ham 1916 and a Doris Mabel Wilding birth in West Ham in 1899

Yes we have both marriage details,  how do I search for a divorce please as this would be between 1933 and 1942 unless he was missing presumed dead.

What is her marital status on the 1942 marriage cert?  If he was missing presumed dead she would be shown as a widow in which case there is no point looking for a divorce
