Occupations in the 1841 Census help please
« on: Friday 27 January 17 19:40 GMT (UK) »
I am looking at William Warwick, who is 6th one down on the left hand page.
Also Ann Warwick, who is 8th one down on left.
Also, can someone just ascertain whether ann is living in her own home?
She was married to william, so thought it would be strange if they were living apart.
Thanks

From the // marks, I'd say William and Sarah were together and Ann separately, although especially with the margin not being in the image (and the 1841 being very general in most cases anyway) we don't know if they were in separate houses or separate within the same building. If you believe that the household was William and Ann, it's not impossible the enumerator got the names switched. Unfortunately it's not easy to prove that; you'd also have to disprove that there was a William and Sarah couple. Of course, there's no evidence that they weren't relatives rather than married.

As Ayashi says the double // before and after her name indicate that she is in a separate household. 8)

I think that the  single dash is in the inhabited houses column and denotes a different house from the previous. The // before Sarah & Ann's name is usually used to denote the end of a building, whereas  a / would denote the end of a household.
Therefore, William & Sarah together, Ann on her own.
