George had been in NZ for 25 yrs. This fits with the shipping info. He arrived in Otago via Melbourne in Dec 1858 with his wife, child and brother.

Just to add interest, I have found a Robert Riddell born in 1823 in Cardiganshire, Wales, parents John Riddell and Janet Stavert. This Riddell family also moved to Scotland. I can't find any evidence that they were related, although they all lived in a similar part of Scotland.

That family certainly fits with the George Riddle that I found in Lairg on the 1851 in Lairg. Not sure what the family were doing in Wales though - maybe a shepherding job and then returned. Some of my Scottish ancestors moved from Scotland to Wales in 1830s.

Maybe connected to the Sutherland clearances.

Gadget - yes, I have always presumed that George Riddle, assistant shepherd with the Robson family in Lairg 1851 was the man, in the absence of any other.

Trish - I assumed this was George's Riddle family. Jane is interesting - when I see those facts together Janet Stevat must be my Janet Stafford. And there is a birth 18 Dec 1836 to Janet Stavert and John Riddle, also Golspie Parish. So maybe there is a link here to James Riddell born 1829 to John Riddell and Janet Stavert?? (Riddell/Riddle) I can't find James's birth.

And Trish again - yes, this Thomas is George's brother, and they arrived on the Queen.

What I would really like is is info on the parents John Riddle and Janet Stafford/Stavert/Stevat, and had wondered if the Welsh birth would help. But now I tend to agree with Gadget that it was probably a shepherding job that took them there.

I've just said Stavert and Stevat  aloud (with a soft t) and can hear it as Stafford - try it and see what you think
