Lookup request Crockfords 1950 STEPHENS
« on: Saturday 28 January 17 17:53 GMT (UK) »
Could someone kindly look up a Crockford's entry for Joseph George STEPHENS who was vicar of St Marks Silvertown during WW2 and into the sixties.  He died in 1984.

Thanks in advance.

Hi OldBee

Welcome back to Rootschat  ;D

I've seen his entry in Crockfords 1938-1940, what are you trying to establish?

Hello Dawn and thank you for your kind welcome back.

It's been a while because so much more is now available online.  But this one has me stuck.

OK - Joe Stephens is - was - my Godfather.  I own a bible with the inscription "Brian's book - with love from his godfather J G Stephens vicar of Silvertown E16 - 1942."  No actual date. I have found a few online references to him, and some photos, but nothing else.   I would love to trace my baptism.  But more to the point - I would love to know how a Silvertown vicar could be by godfather, given that I was born in Enfield, Middlesex in 1942. I thought that if I could get his ordainment record it might give me a few clues.

Any help would be gratefully welcomed.

Regards

I had a bit of spare time at the British Library today, their Crockfords collection is not complete nor on open access in a reading room. I looked at 1937, 1939 and 1940 on microfiche and in 1939 & 1940 he was at All Saints Edmonton. In 1937 he was St Johns Chelsea.

They have other years in the basement but I didn't have the 70mins needed to order them up but can do next visit.

Thank you.  I think you've answered the question, in that my parents came from Edmonton, and they got married in 1939. I wonder...?

... but I would be grateful if it is possible to look at one of the entries and give me where he studied, his d and p dates, and who ordained him.  Then I may be able to get his ordination record from the relevant bishops office.

Thank you again.  You've set me off on a fascinating quest.  Why do we never think to ask about these things earlier in life?
