Hello,

The marriage record shows:

Maria Moore filiam  Johannis Joyce et relictam Thomae Moore

This means that she is the daughter of John Joyce and the widow of Thomas Moore, I would think.

Thanks for that, I found another Joyce marriage in 1872, for Elizabeth Joyce and Robert Clarke who where also living in Canterbury St, Liverpool. It's possible Maria and Elizabeth were sisters, and Robert Clarke and Patrick Clarke (Maria's 2nd husband) were brothers.

But now I am having great difficulty finding the 2 sisters births in Liverpool, Elizabeth abt 1845, Maria abt 1851.There is also no sign of them on the censuses for 1861 or 1871. Their father was named either Thomas or John? but not sure what their mother was called. On Maria's marriage record to Thomas Moore it has the latin name "Zeleitam" as the name of her mother. Can anyone  help me further on this please?

Hello,

Are you looking at the Latin record available on Liverpool Catholic records?

Please read my reply 1 - it says Maria is the daughter of John Joyce and the relict (relictam)  - the widow of Thomas Moore.

I'd agree that "Zeleitam" is a mistranscription of "relictum" - relict or widow. It's very unsual for a mother's name to be noted on a marriage entry.

One problem with your theory on Maria and Elizabeth Joyce - the latter says her father is Thomas Joyce (deceased) on her marriage

I can see a possible for Elizabeth in 1871 - a servant in Manchester - but not prior to that. Not obvious birth registration though
