Tavistock Street Bedford
« on: Sunday 29 January 17 17:13 GMT (UK) »
Hi,  Kellys directory  in 1910 shows no 53 Tavistock Street Bedford as a dairy. I would like to confirm (or not) that a Mr Harry Brown, farmer, rented/owned it from mid 1920s or in the thirties. Can anyone help? Thanks

Have you tried the 1939 register on FindMyPast to see if he was still living there in 1939?

Yes, I have checked the 1939 register and he was living in Luton by then.

The Heritage Library which opens every Tuesday in Bedford has a series of Bedford Directories covering that period, I can look in this week to see who is at that address.

Were you aware that on 1911 census that address was lived in by Mrs Eva Green, corsetiere, age 57, widow & her children. Mrs Evangeline Green died at that address age 58 at Bedford on 28/5/1912 as per newspaper report. In 1901 she's a widow, occupation Dairy Proprietor, in 1891 her husband Charles is dairyman, but they were living elsewhere in Bedford.

(*) later.... although when Mr Charles Smith Green died on 13 Aug 1896 the newspaper report & his probate calendar entry says he lived at 53 Tavistock Street...

Thank you for the information .

It is family memory that Harry Brown sold milk from a shop in Tavistock St. but the dates are vague.  My father was born in the 1920s and remembered the tiled rooms and i know Harry was in Luton in 1939 so if the story is true he was in Tavistock St between the mid Twenties  and 1939.

Sorry no Harry Brown at that address....

While it was a dairy in 1910 Kellys with Mrs Eva Green; the following Kellys made no mention of dairy: in 1914 it had Frank Hammond, pork butcher, 1920 not listed, 1924&1928&1931&1936  it was William Sargent, picture framer

The Bedford Directories had similar...
1912,13,14 had Edward Prior Green (son of Eva Green)
1915,16,17 had Frank Hammond... then
1918 it was Mrs Sarah Hammond - pork butcher
1922,23,25,26 etc... William Victor Sargent - picture framer

There was a Harry Brown listed living at 71 Queen Street which is nearby, but he was a caretaker for the Arcade, 1917 thru to 1922

Cheers John
