Probate Emily Jane DICKSON aka "Emily of The Filling Station".
« on: Monday 30 January 17 21:36 GMT (UK) »
Didn't know whether to Common Room or Staffordshire so will try here first.
Hope the probate does attach properly.
Was wondering if anyone can explain why Emily Jane was otherwise “Emily of The Filling Station Keele”?   Have googled and there seems to be one of the big motorway rest places there now but only since the 1960’s.  So did Emily just have an ordinary Petrol/Service station there, which probably in the 1930’s, was an unusual occupation for a woman, or is there a more interesting reason for the nickname?  All suggestions most welcome.

Emily Jane c1849 as Johnson or Colclough, married Thomas Dickson c1841 Wellington Staffs. in 1870.
Thomas Orr Dickson “Of no occupation” was one of her sons c1878.

I don't think it's a nickname.  I would read it as "Emily Jane otherwise Emily" meaning she was known by either name, then the address not that she was known as "Emily of the Filling Station" :D

As she was a widow maybe her husband had a business there?  Do you have any probate for him?

The format in this index never varies. The section "of..." states that person's last residential address.
You might find a street directory of the time to help: Keele will have changed a lot, what with a university and a motorway arriving!

Milliepede,
Thank you, her husband was a "Mineral Water Manufacturer"  he was of Grove Cottage Far-green Hanley Staffs. probate 1907.  So it could quite possibly be a filling station for mineral water.
GrahamSimons, now that you point it out, just had a quick look at some other probates and there is a definite lack of commas etc to break up the wording.  Will have a search for an old map tomorrow, have to take the dog to the vet and it's a steaming 32C out there so not looking forward to it at all.
Cheers
