British Library Look Up Please - Book of Remembrance, William Parry/Perry
« on: Tuesday 31 January 17 19:02 GMT (UK) »
We have been searching for more than 10 years without success for a death certificate for my mother’s grandfather William Parry.  He apparently died before she was born and was never mentioned by her parent’s.  Mum is now 84 and we would love to be able to fill this gap in for her.

William was born on the 27th July 1868 in Nantmawr near Mold in Flintshire but moved with his parents to Staffordshire when he was less than 2 years old where he then grew up and worked as a miner and railway labourer/bricklayer.

He is recorded on the 1911 Census living at 10 Stubbs Street, Newcastle-under-Lyme and is living with his wife Florence and daughter Alice May.  His age is given as 43 and his occupation is described as a bricklayers labourer working in the Railway industry.  The Brampton Museum in Newcastle under Lyme has a Rate Book for the Newcastle under Lyme Poor Law Union for 1914 where a “William Perry”, living at 12 Stubbs Street, is assessed under section 4 of the Poor Rate Assessment and Collection Act 1869.

There is then a gap of 16 years before his daughter Alice May Parry marries Henry Pepper on the 2nd August 1930. On their marriage certificate Alice May’s  residence is still 12 Stubbs Street and in the place where her Father’s name should be recorded it just says “deceased”.

One suggestion has been that because he had experience of mining he may have been a tunneller and was killed in the First World War.

Searching the British Library catalogue it appears they hold the following document:

Borough of Newcastle-under-Lyme. The Book of Remembrance: being a record of those from this borough who gave their lives for their country during the Great War, 1914-1919. Published 1922.
Location: 9085.ee.7. Identifier: 002641416.

It would be fantastic if anyone is visiting the British Library and look to see if there is a William Parry/Perry listed in the Book of Remembrance.

Many thanks in anticipation of some assistance.

I've moved your topic and will try to do the look-up for you most probably next week unless someone else steps in.

Have you tried contacting Staffordshire Archives to see if they have a copy?

Thanks dawnsh that would be great :)

We have tried the Newcastle under Lyme reference and local history libraries but they don't hold copies.  Staffordshire archives also have an online catalogue and it isn't listed there either.  So far the British Library is the only place where we have found there is a copy.
