In Ireland the spelling Meharg is more common than Maharg. Using Family Search's Irish civil registration index (with exact spelling) there are only 18 Maharg results but 598 for Meharg.

Hi Heather,
Your version/quote is off one off Joe Graham 's that I did read, among many  other sites that also give a completely different versionof where the maharg and alike name came from. From what I can gather not one of the versions are proven. I do like proof  (it's a  curse of mine   ;D)
I don't think my Graham's(or my present day Graham cousins in Ireland) go back far enough with their Grahams  to stem from the Graham's of white Park
I totally disagree with the statement from that most present day stem from white Park of that name

Graham is also an Engish name, and many settlers with the name came from England too with the free land

My grandfather said that his grandfather ( this Nixon))was born in Scotland, I'm yet to prove where he was born. He was COI, all of my Grahams in Ireland were. I haven't found a baptism for him either in Ireland or Scotland, so frustrating the lack of records, wish my grandad was still alive so I could quiz him over his grandad, he talked and talked, lol, but did I listen???( my grandad died the 1990s) my mum knew the above Nixon's son , her grandfather who eas also called Nixon (my g grandfather) but he died when she was just a little girl in Ireland so she's forgotten a lot what he used to say to her.

McHarg seems the most common name (if I buy into the theory)
Its a very interesting subject

Kind regards :)

Following Aghadowey's info, I found Nixon GRAHAM junior's grave in Kilbride Cemetery.
http://www.discovereverafter.com/plot/82645
[The site's record lists his age as 85 (?!), though there is nothing explicit about his age at death on the memorial stone.]

No sign of his Dad in the cemetery.
[So that line of speculative investigation appears to draw a blank.]

----
A lead on the origins of the NG policeman:

DONEGAL NEWS
The death has occurred at the great age of 97 years, of Mr. Francis Graham, Drimcroagh.
Among members of his family are the Rev. Wm. Graham, who is a rector in England and Mr. Nixon Graham. R.U.C.. Belfast.
11 February 1938 - Derry Journal

Worth a sniff in that direction?

----
The name seems to have carried on in the locality:

"... Mr Dixon Graham, 19-year-old son of Mr. Gawn Graham, Main Street. Ballyclare."
17 February 1944 - Larne Times

My great aunt Florence seems to have been at school with him.
29 February 1936 - Larne Times
[Sadly we lost her last year (on the day of her 90th birthday), so can't ask her about the GRAHAM family.]

Bapt.1811- https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NDKM-CNL
Possibly connected is this Nixon Graham marriage-

The above can be eliminated as can most of the other English ones by comparing details to English census records.
