Trouble tracing the BURGON/BURGAN family of SILKSTONE
« on: Wednesday 01 February 17 17:31 GMT (UK) »
Hello all,

I'm having some real trouble tracing the Burgon/Burgan part of my family.

To start, I have Sarah Burgon, baptized 1713 at Silkstone, the daughter of Martha Burgon (it seems like Sarah may have been an illegitimate child).
Now, the only baptism in the area I could find for Martha was 7 Nov 1669 at Silkstone, the daughter of Hugh. This however would have made her 44 years old at the time of birth of Sarah, which is quite old despite being still possible.

So, if this baptism for Martha is correct, then she had at least 2 siblings - William (baptized 19 Jan 1667 at Silkstone), and Alice (bap 17 Mar 1671 at Silkstone). On Alice's baptism record, it gives the name of her mother - Elizabeth.
Despite this, I can't find a marriage at all for Hugh Burgon to an Elizabeth.

So then I tried to find out a bit more about Hugh to see if that would help me locate a marriage. I found what I think is his burial at Silkstone on 25th February 1699. This doesn't give an age though, so I don't know his birth year. I tried doing a general search for a baptism record for Hugh, and it doesn't seem like there are many Hugh Burgon's at all! The only one that appeared was in London, 12 Oct 1636, son of Hugh, but obviously London is very far away from Silkstone, and I have no way to prove that this is my Hugh.

Any help or advice with this would be greatly appreciated!
Many thanks,
Holly

Thank you, I hadn't found those records when I looked on FindMyPast, whereabouts can I find these records? :)
