I see you are in Australia so probably not so familiar with UK sources (as I am not too familiar with Australian sources  ;D )

The GRO facility can be accessed in the link below. You have to register and create a password but it is free to search.  You only pay if you want to order a cert.  Births on the free index from 1837 now show mother's maiden name, and deaths show age at death.
