Where is "Huddlestown" or "Middletown" in Yorkshire?
« on: Thursday 02 February 17 13:44 GMT (UK) »
Does anybody know where these two towns or villages are?
(Huddlestown or Middletown)

I'm trying to locate the date and place of birth of John Brook, born circa 1850, and he gives these two places of birth in the 1881 and 1901 censuses respectively.

Thanks!  :)

There's a Huddleston within the area of Sherburn in Elmet.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Huddleston cum Lumby was 8 miles N.E. of Pontefract, according to Bartholomew's Gazetteer (1904).  There's no entry for a Middletown in Yorkshire - but more than one entry for Middleton.

They could have been mispelled by the Enumerator or mis-transcribed...

Huddleston or Middleton sound more likely. In any case I don't know were they are?  ???

1871 John is said to be born Middlestown, living in Altofts with his grandparents Barney and Elizabeth Bramley.

Middlestown to Altofts is about 10 miles.

1891 he is living in Altofts with wife Julia (Fisher) and a number of children - all children born Altofts, John is born Middlestown.

Could this be John's baptism?  The church at Middlestown doesn't come into existence until 1877.  Middlestown is in the area of Thornhill.  Smithy Brook is mid way between Thornhill and Middlestown.

St Michael and All Angels, Thornhill - 3 June 1849

John son of Joseph (Wheelwright) and Susannah Brook of Smithy Brook.
