It has been suggested by members of the South African Genealogy group on Facebook that it's virtually impossible to obtain birth certificates from South Africa.
Do you know if this is the case?

I don't have much knowledge of SA I'm afraid, I had an ancestor who went there in 1890 (married here in England first) and had 2 children out there so that's my interest.

I've never tried to get a birth certificate but was lucky enough to find baptisms for childrens children I never knew about on family search.  Can't see yours though  :(

Has Mary Ann Smith died by 1911?

You can contact your local South African Embassy and they will help with the forms needed to request a birth certificate. It may take some time but it can apparently be done.

Given the age of the births the official Birth Register should be in the Cape Archives. You may need to hire a researcher to go and have a look at the official register. The birth registers are free to browse so long as the birth took place more than 100 year ago

For anyone finding this post at a later date, I should add that the link to the Lewiston family (as mentioned in the first post) has been eliminated.
Still looking for the births of Constance and Edith - born in Uitenhage, South Africa - parents believed to be Henry Smith and Frances/Fannie Carter.
