Hi Mabel.

Thank you for that information. How do I get to see the registers?

This has become a mission for me to know my grandfathers on both sides, as I did not know my grandfather in my mum's side either.

They're on Ancestry, and possibly other subscription sites

If John and Ethel were still together in 1939 on the er's then searching the National Archives catalogue woud not gve a results.

HMCTS have not published their decree absulte indexes online after 1937

If money is no object then you could apply to HMCTS for a 10 year search

https://www.gov.uk/copy-decree-absolute-final-order

however, it's very costly at £65 for every 10 years searched and as you have already mentioned there is no garantee they divorced.

Does Ethel's death cert hold any more clues to her marital status? who was the informant? did Ethel leave a will?

Hi dawnsh.

Thank you for your message. If money was no object I would maybe think about the search, but not right now.

When my Grandmother died in 1977, I am pretty sure it was my father who dealt with it all and as I am not in direct contact with him anymore, I cannot ask him.
She did leave a will and it again was sorted out by my father. I remember as a child I was allowed to pick one of her ornaments to keep.
Unfortunately as in so many families, things were very tense between everyone and I think this is why nothing was ever spoken about.

I have discovered the parents of John are John George Martin and Ann Lucas. So going to look into them, to see if I can find anything.
