Official to Archbishop of Canterbury
« on: Friday 03 February 17 22:13 GMT (UK) »
I hope someone can help me here regarding a reference I've found to one of my ancestors, Vincent Denne, LLD of Kingston, Kent.

Whilst looking at some Kent wills I came across a reference to Vincent in the Will of Isaac Filmer, of Stalisfield, dated 1569. The Will was "Proved before Vincent Denne LLD, Official to Archbishop of Canterbury. 15th Feb. 1569/70 by John Onckle and William Mosbye"

I know from his own Will, and the Wills of family members, that Vincent Denne, LLD held lands and property in Canterbury. My question is this, what does the title "Official to Archbishop of Canterbury" specify and is there anyway I can find out more about him in this capacity? I have a copy of his own will but I don't think he is referred to in the same way in this will.

Thanks

Matt

You'll find all his details in the Clergy Database, under the spelling Vincent DEN ...

http://db.theclergydatabase.org.uk/jsp/search/index.jsp

... which shows that he served as Commissary of the City and Diocese of Canterbury from 3 November 1563 until 1571.

Hi

Many thanks for that. I've used this database before when researching my Ryall ancestors who were members of the clergy in Dorset, but it didn't cross my mind to use it to research Vincent.

Thanks again.

I've just had a look at his record and it states that in 1556 his 'clerical status' was that of 'exorcist'. Does this think what I think it does? Was Vincent carrying out exorcisms in Kent?

Yes no surprise really, if you consider the Church believes in life after death, it therefore follows that as well as good spirits there would be bad spirits or lost spirits.

Searching under various keys "vincent den", "vincent denn" and vincent denne" (including "   " as part of search key) returns quite a number of hits - all but one relating to the 17th Century Vincent Denne. There is one mention possibly of "your" 16th Century Vincent -

"... Thomas Denne, esq, of that place (ie. Dennehill, in Kingston) in Henry VIII's reign gave it (ie. the manor of Burghsted) to his son William, whose grandson William, son of Vincent Denne LL.D died in possession of it in 1640 ..."

No mention of status/position

It is now called "Deliverance ministry" by the Church of England
"The ministry of exorcism and deliverance may only be exercised by a priest authorized by the diocesan bishop." http://www.rootschat.com/links/01jfs/

Thanks for the info Guy. Vincent is certainly turning out to be an interesting person. His will is quite extensive and it looks like he lived an interesting life.
