Mary and Lucy who - query sisters
« on: Saturday 04 February 17 10:56 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I think that Mary born about 1811 and Lucy born about 1814 are sisters. They are both born in Burnham, Buckinghamshire. I need help to see if I am correct and what is the their maiden surname.

It started at the 1881 England census with Thomas PUSEY being in the home of his cousin Thomas ELEMS/ELMS.

1881 RG11/53 Folio 88    page 42

Ravenscourt Terrace  -  Hermitage Lodge

Thomas Elmes age 46 widower Gardener born Farnham Royal
Edwin Joseph  Elmes son age 13 Farnham Royal
Emma dau age 9 Hammersmith
Thomas Pusey age 30 or 38 cousin carpenter born Farnham Royal

Ten years ago I had no idea how they were cousins. All I knew was that Thomas PUSEY was the eldest son of Thomas PUSEY and Lucy HARMAN. Through the kind people of Rootschat I know that Thomas ELMES/ELMS is the son of Edward and Mary ELMS.

I have the birth certificate of the youngest child of Lucy and Thomas PUSEY so that is where I get the maiden name HARMAN. However I can not find a marriage for Lucy HARMAN and Thomas PUSEY.

I have not had much luck looking for the marriage of Mary and Edward ELMS/ELMES which I think has to be prior to 1837.

Now I have used the 1851 Farnham Royal H0107 /1718  Folio 693 page 8 to look at the younger siblings of Thomas ELMES.

Edward Elmes age 41 Beaconsfield Buck
Mary wife age 30 Beaconsfield
Solomon son age 10 Farnham Royal
Lucy dau age 14 Farnham Royal
Sarah age 6 Farnham Royal
Shadrach age 3 Farnham Royal
James age 8 Farnham Royal
Thomas Elmes age 17 born Farnham Royal

With the new GRO birth indexes I looked up the ELMES children. Under ELMS they give the mothers maiden name for the above children as HARMON/ HARMAN.
Then I checked the children of Thomas and Lucy PUSEY. Under PUSEY they give the mothers maiden name as ARMON / HARMAN.

So are they sisters and what is their maiden name?  :-\

Any thoughts or help most appreciated.

Many thanks in advance
Helen

Hi Heywood

Thank you this information. This gives Edward ELMS marrying a Mary ARMAN in 1831.

Now that gives the surname ARMAN instead of HARMAN. I assume that Mary and Lucy could not read or write therefore what surname should I now search for.

Should I look for Mary and Lucy under variations of ARMAN - not sure what they would be.

Thanks
Helen

Hi Milliepede

Yes that is the right time frame I think as Thomas PUSEY was christened on October 8 1843. The new GRO birth index gives his mothers maiden name as ARMAN. edit: should have said ARMON. The only time it is not spell HARMAN.

So could Lucy ANNON be my Lucy HARMAN as I have not found any marriage under the name HARMAN.

Thanks
Helen

I wondered about that one too Milliepede. Looks a strong possibility doesn't it.

Hi
Thank you all for your replies. The last reply is interesting as my ancestor is Henry and he had a sister Jane.
So would I be correct in assuming that HARMAN developed from the name ARMAN.

When I have some spare money I will have to look at getting the 1843 marriage of Thomas PUSEY and Lucy ANNON to see who her father is.

Thank you for the 1841 census for Lucy ARMAN and Jane ARMAN. I wonder where Mary and Edward ELMS/ELMES are in 1841.

Thanks again
Helen
