Marriage for Mary Holdroyd & Charles Turton either Marr or Arksey
« on: Saturday 04 February 17 14:07 GMT (UK) »
Marriage of this couple is 3/11/1823. Ancestry has this date for both Marr & Arksey but one says Mary Halroyd & the other Mary Holdroyd. Would like any further details of perhaps witnesses or Marys parentage to enable me to try & find her baptism.
She is a widow on 1841 census in Birdwell with her 2 sons then seems to disappear.
Any help will be much appreciated
Thanks

The reason for the mention of the two parishes is because according to the entry in the York Bishop's Transcripts Charles Turton was from the parish of Marr and Mary Holdroyd was from the parish of Arksey. They married in Marr and her surname was definitely Holdroyd according to the image. I can only presume that Halroyd is a mistranscription

Thanks for the info. Witnesses don't appear to be connected but you never know. Mary has been a mystery for me as I can't trace her after 1841 so will keep battling on.
Much appreciated
Lynn

If it helps I've trawled through the Arksey baptisms from 1793 to 1807 and can't find a baptism for a Mary Holdroyd or Halroyd for that matter. She may have been living there when she married but it doesn't look as though she was born there.

Thanks.
Iv'e had a look for Jonathan Anley & found one living Almondbury area in 1841 but no clues in his neighbours. There are some Holdroyds baptised around Marsden area so may be a connection.
Once again thanks
Lynn

Hello
I can only find one Mary Turton in 1841 At Birdwell and she was born 1811 ,2 boys  John and William aged 15 and 13 .
Also in household are Thomas Hoyland 1796 and William Holroyd 1826.
Is that the family.

Yes that's the right one. Had seen the other people in the same dwelling but couldn't decide what the names were. Definitely worth investigating
Thanks

Hello
Have you got any baptisms for John and William Turton?
There is one in Sprotbrough 1824 which could be John, also on page is a William Holroyd to parents Benjamin and Hannah
Also in Birdwell  1841 is a Benjamin Holroyd born 1821,he was baptized in sprotbrough in 1823 to Benjamin and Hannah
Maybe William Holroyd in the household 1841 is Mary Turtons nephew.
