Baptisms - Huddersfield 1830's
« on: Saturday 04 February 17 15:59 GMT (UK) »
It's always puzzled me why only the first 5 of 9 children were baptised in the early 1800's, now I'm thinking the other 4 probably were but in a different place I haven't found yet.

The first 5 I have are from St Nicholas Cumberworth from 1816-1826.  On the 1841 census the family are in Huddersfield so am wondering if they moved and would have changed church?

The 4 children were born between 1829-1835 and it would be good to find them to complete the set especially as one, Thomas Hinchliffe 1830 father James, is my direct great great.

Any suggestions where to look or who to contact would be gratefully received.  I don't live in Yorkshire but am hoping to visit again later this year.

Thank you  :)

Yes I do Emma c1833 and George c1835 have Huddersfield in 1851.

Thomas c1830 is lodging in strange parts and has Manchester but all other census have Huddersfield.  I believe he probably found work in Manchester after leaving home en route to where he settled.

Elizabeth c1829 looks like Burton?  Kirkburton maybe but  :-\ after that she puts Huddersfield.

... George c1835 ...

Is that the George?  Yorkshire's answer to The Scarlet Pimpernell - they seek him here, they seek him there?   ;D  ;D  ;D

It certainly is - THE George.  I get a new grey hair every time his name is mentioned!

Anyway, back to the other troublesome Hinchliffes that you were really asking about, might there be something here just waiting to be found .....

Have you eliminated the George Hinchcliffe b1836 Who is in Hayfield Derbyshire on census from 61 onwards.States birthplace as Shepley or Holmfirth later.
On 61 he is with wife Jane (b1838 Nee Townend) and sister Sarah b1840 who i think is a Townend relative born to a Hinchcliffe
Jane is on 41 and 51 in Huddersfield with parents Henry and Fanny.

Thanks for the link STG  :)

Lee - thanks for the suggestion but yes I have eliminated that one, along with about 100 others!  None of the marriages I have found give the right father (James) in fact I haven't found any George marriages with a father James at all  :-\

My ancestors from the Huddersfield area were baptised in various local churches:

All Hallows Church, Kirkburton
St Peter's Church, Huddersfield
St Mary's Church, Mirfield
All Hallows Church, Almondbury
St John's Church, Denby
Denby Dikeside Wesleyan Church, Cumberworth
St John the Baptist Church, Penistone

Your ancestors could have been baptised at any one of these - and they are all on Ancestry.  Check out www.rootschat.com/links/01jgf/

If you do a search and get no results, in the left hand column you'll find a white box and an option to "Browse Individual Records".  This will bring up all the parish churches, it's a bit of a drag but if you go through them starting with the more obvious ones you may just find your ancestor or his siblings.  As I found, not all the parish records seem to have been transcribed.

Of course, you will have to search the non conformist records separately.

Good luck

Lizzie
